macOS’s Proxy Settings

Implementing a proxy on macOS allows you to route your internet traffic through a specific server, which can be useful for a variety of purposes, including improving online privacy, accessing geo-restricted content, or filtering internet content.

Below is a step-by-step guide to setting up a proxy server on a Mac running macOS. This guide is intended for configuring network settings at the system level.

Step 1: Open System Preferences

  1. Click on the Apple menu icon in the top-left corner of your screen.

  1. Select "System Preferences" from the dropdown menu.

Step 2: Go to Network Settings

In the System Preferences window, click on "Network" to open network settings.

Step 3: Select Your Network Service

  1. From the list on the left side of the Network window, select the network service you wish to configure the proxy for (e.g., Wi-Fi, Ethernet).
  2. If the network service is not visible, you may need to click the lock icon at the bottom left of the window and enter your administrator password to make changes.
  3. Click on the "Advanced..." button in the bottom right of the window.

Step 4: Open the Proxies Tab

In the Advanced network settings window, navigate to the "Proxies" tab.

Step 5: Configure Proxy Settings

  1. In the Proxies tab, you will see a list of different proxy protocols (e.g., Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), SOCKS Proxy).
  2. Select the checkbox next to the type of proxy you are setting up. For example, if you're setting up a standard web proxy, select "Web Proxy (HTTP)".

  1. With the proxy type selected, enter the proxy server address in the "Web Proxy Server" field. You can get the information from your Geonode dashboard. Copy the address indicated in your 'Host' by clicking on the copy icon.

  1. Port Number: 9001 (This is the specific port you'll need to use for the connection. Make sure to enter it exactly as shown.)

  1. If the proxy server requires authentication, check the "Proxy server requires password" box and enter your username and password in the fields that appear.

Step 6: Bypass Proxy Settings for Local Addresses (Optional)

If you want to bypass the proxy server for local addresses, you can enter those addresses in the "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains" field in the same window.

Step 7: Apply and Close

  1. Click "OK" to close the Advanced settings window.
  2. Click "Apply" in the Network window to apply your new proxy settings.

Step 8: Test the Connection

  1. Open a web browser and try navigating to a website. If everything is configured correctly, you should be able to browse the internet through your proxy server.
  2. If you encounter any issues, double-check your settings or contact your network administrator or proxy service provider for further assistance.
